PVP: I've Been Long Overdue for a Rogue Hate Post

It's actually amazing that this blog has gone on as it has without a rogue hate rant. Though it's not really the class I hate. A good rogue in an instance who knows how to keep from pulling aggro off the tank is a very valuable (and unfortunately rare) commodity.

What I do hate are the Horde rogues with no spine. Like the level 70 last night who attempted to gank me while Rastel and I were fighting a Ravager. I instant healed and faerie fired him, and Rastel turned around and started attacking him. We get him down to less than half health while I frantically keep us both healed. So of course the big meanie sprints off and vanishes.

Of course his ego is smarting a little after that one, so he decided to come back and try it again. And again. Every single time we almost get him, he sprints off towards the Horde town.

If that wasn't enough, we also had a level 61 attempt to gank us five or six times. Every time he was almost dead, he'd blind us and run. I never thought it would be possible to carry that much blind powder. And why would you waste it by trying again and again and again to take two people down who keep kicking your ass?

The reason why I hate rogues is really this: the meanest, most juvenile little brats on the planet roll rogue and try their best to make everyone else miserable. Because yes, it IS rather annoying to attempt to quest while constantly dancing back and forth so nothing can sneak up on you.

Just in case you were wondering. -.-

PVP: Why (Horde) Warlocks Rule

Yet more questing in Outland with Rastel. We were working on a series of elite quests when two Undead Warlocks run up. We do the classic pause, wait awkwardly....

And then the Warlocks /wave. So we drop our guard and go back to summoning our elite bossman.

Which, apparently, they were trying to summon too. Ours pops first, so we attack it, just as one of the nearby elites adds to the battle. I start freaking out, Rastel is attempting to tell me that yes, we ARE badass enough to do this, when I notice that the 'locks have taken the add.

I never thought I could love a dessicated, demon-summoning corpse, but those two were quite the sexy beasts in that moment. Chalk it off to adrenaline, or just absolute squee at the fact that not only were we going to not die, but that my "enemies" were being genuinely nice.

After the battle, we thank them profusely, mount up, and get ready to head off. Then we realize that they are asking us to wait. So we ponder for a moment, and then it sinks in that they want help with the elite. Which we feel is only fair, since in some lights it could seem like we took their kill.

Alright then. They summon it, we let them claim the kill, then we start wailing on it. I was tweaking out because I couldn't heal them and I was terrified I was going to accidentally attack one of them (Rastel was worried he was going to AoE out of habit), but the battle ended quickly with all parties still alive.

We kept seeing them around all day, which was good, because they were in party when the Horde outnumbered us, and we think they kept us from getting ganked on more than one occasion.

Unfortunately, it's not always easy to keep the opposing faction alive. We were off in a different area waiting to kill another massive elite alongside at least six other Alliance when a different 'lock wanders up, sees us, and pauses. It's obvious he has a "well, fuck it, I'm dead at this point anyway" moment before continuing to amble over. The elite spawns, and Rastel pulls.

Pause here to gloat. The party of five waiting to take down the elite see the two of us prepare to duo this guy, stand back, and go "oh, this should be good." Rastel is tanking, and I'm debuffing and healing like a mofo, and there are six other people standing behind me waiting for us to go out in a blaze of shame.

But not the 'lock. He dives on in when the elite is at half health and throws a few debuffs of his own on. At this point I've still got a ton of mana and Rastel has been at full health for the duration of the battle. The Alliance behind us decide sadly that we're not going to wipe after all and start halfheartedly throwing things at the elite in disappointment. Elite goes down, we thank the 'lock, and wait around for the elite to respawn because I want to heal for the party of five (not a healer in the bunch, the morons.)

Suddenly, out of nowhere, an Alliance rogue pops up and backstabs our 'lock friend. Every single Alliance in the area is screaming at her, but she keeps wailing on him until he dies.

What a bitch. If he's standing in a group of nine Alliance and is still among the living, shouldn't that be a sign that he's off-limits?

PVP: I Don't Even Know Who to Trust Anymore.

My initial instinct every time I saw a Ghost Wolf used to be:
MOONFIRE! MOONFIRE! MOONFIRE! MOONFIRE! MOONFIRE!

Now I just get confused.

PVP: I weep for my class

I was questing in Hellfire Peninsula with Rastel today when I was attacked by a level 62 druid. I guess he thought I would go down easily-- and for that very reason he is an idiot. One of the first things I learned while PVPing was to never attack another druid if I wanted to move on and do something else at any point before sunrise. Two level 60 druid guildies of mine once attempted to duel, and they ended up forfeiting after almost two hours of fighting. Crowds gathered, then got bored and went away. Even the novelty of their inability to destroy each other had managed to wear off.

We simply cannot kill each other. At least back then, when the only decent spec was restoration. Even now, many Druids don't do damage fast enough to kill other players with multiple heal over time abilities. I have ended long battles with full health AND full mana. How are you supposed to kill someone who can do the exact same thing?

Now this guy probably thought he had an edge on me because he was both feral spec and two levels higher than me. I also assume he could tell by my play style that I was a tree druid (my pet name for Restoration spec). Unfortunately, he didn't think about the fact that I can heal away any and all damage he does as he is doing it. I may not be able to kill him myself, but I am certainly not going to die.

But, most importantly, he failed to take into account that Rastel is a level 61 Paladin.

The battle was almost sad. I admire his tenacity, but I weep for my class.

PVP: Nixoo

Not all PVP stories end bitterly or with triumphant ownage. Some end on a rather Hallmarky note. This is one.

It seems like all the best PVP happened to me in Desolace. (At the time, though, it didn't seem that great). I was running down one of the main roads when I come across one of my level 55 friends chasing down a half-dead 38 mage. I run up and start yelling at him about ganking, so he backs off and lets the mage run away. The mage knew I was responsible, I think, because he waved at me before he took off.

Later on I'm trying to kill an aged kodo when a vulture and a scorpid both add. I'm running out of mana and about to die when I see the mage from earlier run by, stop, and then approach. At this point I'm expecting him to kill me, thus rubbing in the fact that I saved his ass from my friend earlier. I see him start to cast a spell...

...he sheeps the vulture and then takes off again. Because of this, I live.

And that is why to this day I never gank without provocation.

PVP: My Warlock and Me

This is a PVP story from my Desolace/Arathi days. Mostly Desolace, but there were a few quests in Arathi I was trying to wrap up, so I'd be in one zone one day and a different one the next.

When I was questing in Desolace one day with Blacklight, we ended up over by the Horde base, and a warlock decided to come out and meet us. During the PVP fight I accidentally dragged a couple of buttons off my toolbar, so needless to say I wasn't fighting up to par, and I dropped like a rock. He then proceeded to camp us, so I ressed, stealthed, and began to wreak my revenge, but he ran back into the Horde base before he died. He'd then come back out every few minutes to try to pick us off, fail, and run back to the base. Frustrating.

Well. A few days later I'm back in Arathi questing by the horde base (are you sensing a pattern here?) and the same little warlock appears. At this point I am seven levels above him, so I ignore him and continue questing. I'm in the middle of fighting a mob when I notice that I have a corruption spell on me and just got hit with a shadow bolt. I turn from my mob...and there's the little punk trying to take me down.

I throw a regrowth spell on me, moonfire, faerie fire him, then go bear form and start attacking him up close. His voidwalker is on me, and so is the mob, so I'm at a little under half health when he goes down.

So, what does he do? Uses his soulstone and tries to get me again. I pop back into elf form, heal again, moonfire/faeirie fire him again, and melee his ass to death with my Illusionary Rod. He goes down a second time, I sigh at him, then turn around and finish off my mob.

He ressed soon after and I chased him all the way back to the Horde base. Little punk.

PVP: Blizzard, take heed

Despite my near-constant griping and moaning about PVP, I really do like it. I think it was planned well, and I enjoy it when I'm ready to do it. The only problem is that the Hordies want to PVP when I want to level...

Anyway. It's common knowledge that Hunters aren't quite as strong in PVP, even though they are an excellent class, and pets are often useless during PVP. Warlocks have the same problem. The problem is that they're both classes that are used to having their pet hold their aggro at a distance. As a solo class, they both do very well, but as soon as its time to PVP, there's no way to play it the way the class is meant to.

I've been thinking about ways to solve this for a while, and I think I've come up with one. In PVP, pet taunts should force focus on the pet for five seconds with a diminishing return, since it is an automatic ablility. This gives the hunter or warlock a better chance to stay ranged. I also think it is perfectly reasonable to include this idea since a Succubus can charm you and a mage can sheep you, and this isn't a very different form of crowd control.

Of course, if this were implemented, warriors would want to be able to do it, as well (Sfirot kindly pointed this out.)Warriors have a billion different taunts, so if they were allowed to have all of them have the same effect, they'd become unstoppable PVP tanking machines and probably be overpowered because of it. There is a simple solution here. The taunt that pets use is the same basic taunt used in defensive stance. Make that one the one that forces focus and give it a diminishing return as well, and everyone is happy.

Any thoughts? As a tank it sounds reasonable to me, though most PVP isn't done in defensive stance, which might prove a problem for my plan. And as a warlock, I love the idea of my voidwalker no longer being useless when I see someone coming at me.

PVP: Revenge this.

Saren and I were killing centaurs in Desolace when I notice a lvl 37 Horde shammy. And by "notice", I mean I saw him run up, kill my mob, and begin to advance on me (right. killing my enemy for me before attacking me somehow makes it okay to fight someone four levels lower with half health and half mana.) I quickly invite Saren to party so we can PVP more effectively, and we both run to stand close to each other. The shammy notices I have someone with me, thinks better of it, waves, and runs off. Saren and I decide there's safety in numbers and stay grouped.

A few minutes go by, and I see the shammy again, running back down the road. He's at half health and being chased by a lvl 41 priest. The priest is losing ground, so I change into travel form and tear off after the shammy. When I'm in range, I cast a few instant spells, and he drops. I laugh, since I'd just done to him what he was planning on doing to me earlier (and I think laughing is slightly less evil than spitting on their corpses.)

I run back to Saren and we continue questing. A few minutes later, the shammy, who has rezzed, unstealths and gets me in the back. I spin around and root him, then step back to heal myself and kill his totem. Roomie sees what's going on, goes "ACK!," and runs up to help me fight. He untangles, ignores her completely, and starts running in circles around me while hitting me, trying to make my spells fail (how do they DO THAT?!). Roomie chases after him, and I change to instant spells to make sure I'll keep hitting him.

So the shammy drops again, but he almost took me with him-- I had twenty HP when he went down. It was pretty obvious he didn't care if he died as long as he got me first. And I really couldn't blame him for wanting revenge, since I would have gone after my attacker, too. Plus, I laughed at him, so I would have deserved it if I'd gone down. He definitely made a point. >.<

But I don't blame myself for feeling really smug about the whole thing, either.

I figure at this point he's pretty pissed and might want another go, so I make sure to keep my health and mana high and his corpse in sight while questing. A few minutes go by, and I'm beginning to think he has camped, when I see him get up, run a short distance, then turn around and stare at us.

I don't really want to fight again, plus I'm pretty damn impressed with how close he got to killing me last time around (fucking circle thing....HOW do they do that?), so I bow to him. Saren does the same. He stands there for a sec, then turns and runs off.

PVP: Karma

Blacklight and I were questing in Stonetalon Mountains when I notice two horde off in the distance-- a lvl 21 warrior and a lvl 28 mage. At this point Blacklight is lvl 27, and I am lvl 30. I was in cat form, so immediately stealthed, hoping they hadn't seen me fade out. They both notice Blacklight and begin to move into attack range. The warrior hangs back, the mage walks up to him. Blacklight begins to cast a spell...

...and the mage sheeps him.

Anyone who has ever been sheeped knows how infuriating it is. I hear Blacklight bellow in rage over Ventrilo as I sneak up behind the mage, who has fallen back to let the warrior take care of Blacklight. (I consider this poetic justice since only days earlier he had sheeped me for the first time in a duel.) Since the mage thought Blacklight was alone, he definitely was not expecting to get sliced in the back, and was half dead before he realized what was happening.

Right as I first struck the mage the warrior hit Blacklight, which de-sheeped him, so he began to fight back. By the time he was done with his first spell, the Horde mage was down and I was going after the warrior, who began to run as soon as he realized his buddy was done for.

Needless to say, with two spellcasters after him, he didn't get far.

And that, my friends, is Karma.

PVP: hit me! No, really...

I'm off innocently farming silk at northfold manor, fighting the rogues there in elf form when I see this level 37 ogre warrior come running at me. I was kind of suprised I could see him, since anyone who wanted an element of surprise would have gotten me from behind, and my back was to the road, so it wouldn't have been that hard to do. At this point I am a mere level 31, so I shift into cheetah form and begin to make my escape. As I do, I hear him swing to hit me and miss. (whee awesome headphones.)

I run for a few seconds before I get stunned by a rush. While I am immobilized, he swings at me again...and misses again. By the time he's turned around for another swing I'm moving again, so I jump over his head and keep on running towards the Refuge.

This guy keeps chasing after me, but at this point I'm a little too far away for him to hit, so I start gleefully bounding in circles around him, keeping just out of reach. This continued for about a minute--me hopping around like a fool, him trying desperately to get a swing in. And I guess he was frustrated, because he didn't give up.

In fact, he was so set on landing a hit on me he didn't notice I was running him into a group of mounted lvl 38 elites until it was too late.

I laughed about this for the rest of the day.
